PRESS STATEMENT

The Committee for the Protection of Peoples Mandate (CPPM) condemns in the strongest terms the recent military coup in Burkina Faso and calls on the mutineers to immediately restore the legitimate interim government to power without delay.

We regard this coup as undemocratic, unconstitutional, crude, barbaric, illegal, criminal, irresponsible, assault on the democratic rights of Burkinabes and an embarrassment to the African continent and it must not be allowed to stand.

That this unconstitutional takeover of power is taking place barely two months to the conduct of general elections for the installation of a new democratically elected government speaks volume of the irresponsibility, irresponsiveness and disregard of the coup plotters for constitutional democracy and the integrity of the Burkina Faso people.

Only recently, Nigeria set the pace in the African continent for constitutional change of government by the successful and peaceful conduct of the 2015 general elections which is being replicated by elections conducted so far in Lesotho, Togo, Sudan, Ethiopia, etc. This is a testimony of the fact that unconstitutional change of government in Africa has become outdated and no longer fashionable.

We hereby call on the African union (AU) ECOWAS, European Union and the United Nations to make their position clear on the unacceptability of the criminal assault of democratic rights of citizens of Burkina Faso, by demanding the immediate restoration of the interim government to midwife democracy.

We call on international democratic institutions and labour organizations to join forces with the people of Burkina Faso in rejecting this military coup and restoration of the status quo.

We equally call on the people of Burkina Faso to resort to civil disobedience to send a clear and unequivocal message to the coup plotters that they have committed treason against the state and immediately surrender for prosecution according to the constitution.

We also want to make it clear to the coup plotters that they will be held accountable for breakdown of law and order and its untoward consequences as a result of their criminality and assault on the democratic rights of the people of Burkina Faso.

Thanks.
Yours Sincerely,

Signed.

Nelson Ekujumi
Executive Chairman
