Gani Adams Denies Statement Rejecting National Honours
The National Coordinator of Yoruba’s revolutionary and mass based organisation, Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC), Otunba Gani Adams has disowned a statement credited to him in the social media that he rejected a National Honour to be conferred on him by Nigerian President, Goodluck Jonathan. The statement purportedly made by Adams and which has been widely circulated reads,
“A Government that covertly and overtly encourages corruption has no honour in its arsenal of power to dispense honour. Consequently, I reject the dishonour of the officer of the order of Federal Republic of Nigeria”
The statement which observers have seen as a statement of declaration of war on the policies of the Federal Government which have made the Country takes a down turn economically, Politically and socially has been debunked by Adams. In his reaction, Adams who is away in the United kingdom spoke with NigerianEcho on phone saying people should disregard the statement.
He said, “my attention has been drawn to a statement circulating on facebook and Black berry broadcasts purportedly emanating from me, and stating that I reject the award of OFR bestowed on me by Federal government. I hereby state that at no time did I make such statement and therefore urge all to disregard the said statement.”
In the past, people like Chinua Achebe have rejected
on the account of the situation of the country which showed signs of a failed state. The situation which has not changed as people still clamour for good governance, rule of law, accountability and a commitment from the government to fight corruption that has pervaded the country.
