STOP ATTACKING THE SENSIBILITIES OF THE MUSLIMS
The Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN) National Headquarters has noted with concern the recent comments by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and another group of Christian with the name Catholic Bishop of Nigeria regarding the decision of some Northern States Governors to declare a holiday in recognition of 1446 (2025) Ramadan.
We find these comments not only unwarranted but also insensitive to the religious harmony and peaceful coexistence we strive to maintain in our country. The decision to declare a Ramadan holiday was made in good faith and with the support of the majority of citizens in the affected states.
It is important to emphasize that this holiday does not in any way negatively impact the education sector or the scheduled academic activities of secondary school students. This has been operational for some years without any noise from any quarters within the concerned States.
The declared holiday was meant to bring respite to the students due to the harsh weather within the Northern States. Moreover, the same benefit will also be enjoyed by the Christian that observing their Lent fasting as well. While same consideration has been granted without opposition for Christmas and Easter holidays for Christians over the years.
Furthermore, we find it deeply concerning that CAN and the Catholic Bishop have remained silent on the ongoing Monday sit-at-home order imposed by IPOB in the Eastern region, which has prevented students from attending school for years. This selective outcry suggests bias and does not promote fairness or religious harmony.
If CAN and other religious leaders are truly concerned about education, they should condemn all disruptions, not just those related to Islamic observances. MSSN strongly believes in peaceful coexistence among all religious groups in Nigeria. We urge CAN and the Catholic Bishop to embrace inclusivity and fairness in their statements and actions. Religious tolerance and respect for all faiths are essential for national unity.
