Serena Williams’ coach, Patrick Mouratoglou has declared he will continue as her coach but admitted she is going through “a difficult period” in her life.

Williams has struggled at the grand slams this year, failing to progress beyond the fourth round. But it was Williams’s performance in the doubles at Wimbledon alongside her sister that really gave cause for concern as she appeared barely able to stand and was persuaded to quit after serving a game of double faults.

Williams revealed she was suffering from a viral illness, which was met with scepticism. Her coach also revealed he had not seen her for two days prior to the match.

The Frenchman now insists that Williams is training hard ahead of next month’s US Open telling a french Tennis Magazine: “Serena is clearly going through a difficult period. But after Wimbledon we had many hours of discussions and we have restarted our work.

“Today, she is in a state of mind where she wants to train hard to come back strong. At no time was there any question of our collaboration ending.

“There were complicated things and it is true that Serena is in a difficult phase, but I’ll leave it there.”
