Ogun declares June 12 Public Holiday … announces free medical services to prison inmates
Ogun State Government has declared Thursday 12 June 2014 as work free.
Secretary to the State Government, SSG, Barrister Taiwo Adeoluwa, said the holiday was declared in remembrance of the most credible election in Nigeria
The annual holiday, the statement read, is in honour of the late illustrious son of the state, Chief Moshood Kasimawo Olawale Abiola, widely believed to have won the annulled June 12, 1993 Presidential election and also in commemoration of Democracy Day.
“Government enjoins residents to spend the holiday in sober reflection and continue to pray for the State and Nigeria as a whole”, Adeoluwa stated.
Meanwhile, Ogun State Government has announced plans to extend its free healthcare services to all prison inmates in the state.
The state Commissioner for Health, Dr Olaokun Soyinka, made the announcement when he visited the Oba Prison in Obafemi Owode Local Government Area of the state.
Soyinka said that the government had finalised arrangements to enrol every inmate under its Community Based Health Insurance Scheme.
“This administration is passionate about the health conditions and well being of the inmates and we are putting necessary measures in place to ensure that they are well catered for,” he said.
The commissioner said that the services would cover both preventive and curative health care as well as provision of equipment, drugs and other necessary logistics.
He donated anti-malaria drugs, toiletries, mosquito nets and disinfectants to the prison.
Mr Joseph Olanrele, the Comptroller, Ogun State Prison Command, who received the materials on behalf of the inmates, commended the government and pledged to utilise the items judiciously.
Gov. Ibikunle Amosun had recently visited the prisons and lamented their poor conditions.
He directed that immediate medical attention be extended to the inmates, promising to step up measures in the reform of the prisons. (NAN)
