Breaking News: Appointment of Caretaker Committees Is Illegal and Unconstitutional -Supreme Court
The Nigerian Supreme Court on Thursday, July 11, 2024, in a landmark judgement rule that appointment of Caretaker committees is illegal and unconstitutional and that no governor has any powers to do so. The court also held that it is illegal for Governors to dissolve democratically elected Local Governments. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led Federal Government had instituted a case against the 36 state Governors challenging the interference of the State governors in the administration of Local Governments.
The apex court barred the Federal Government from further paying LG allocations through the State Governments since the practice has been abused by Governors. It ordered the Federal Government to henceforth withhold allocations to Local Governments governed by unelected officials appointed by the Governor.
