Yobo Reveals Near-Move to Arsenal was Blocked by Everton Years Ago
Former Nigeria International, Joseph Yobo has revealed that he once had an opportunity to join Arsenal but Everton blocked the move.
Yobo, who is now a free agent after being released by Fenerbache following an unsuccessful loan spell at Norwich City last season, is now being linked to Arsenal again, according to transfer rumours. The Gunners look to sign the 34-year-old as potential free transfer target to help solve their defensive problems.
The former Super Eagles skipper however insists he is not aware of any recent interest from Arsenal, though he claimed that he was close to signing for Arsenal years ago as a replacement for Sol Campbell before Everton blocked the move.
He said: “I read Arsenal was interested in me, it was news to me. There is no formal contact with anybody. I know Arsene Wenger admires me a lot and wanted me to replace Sol Campbell some years ago, but Everton blocked the move.
“He wanted me to partner Kolo Toure in defence; I was younger then. If negotiations are taking place, I am not aware, maybe the club is speaking with my agent.”
