Xabi Alonsa Retires from International Football
Spanish midfielder Xabi Alonso has announced his retirement from international football.
The Real Madrid player announced his retirement via Twitter, saying: “I announce my retirement from international football. It’s been an enormous honour for 11 great years.”
Alonso, 32, was part of a Spain team that dominated world football following their first European championship victory in 2008, alongside Xavi Hernandez and Carles Puyol who have both retired from international duty too.
He made his Spain debut as a Real Sociedad player against Ecuador in April 2003, won 114 caps for Spain, and also helped the team win the 2010 World Cup and two European championships in 2008 and 2012.
His last role in the team was as part of the 2014 World Cup squad that failed to defend their 2010 World Cup win.
