Wole Soyinka Shares Cancer Experience
Nigeria’s only Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, has revealed that he was diagnosed of cancer last December.
Soyinka disclosed this at a press conference at the June 12 Cultural Centre, Abeokuta, Ogun State on Tuesday, saying he made the disclosure so as to create awareness about cancer.
He also said he survived the disease because of early detection, treatment and proper dieting, while revealing his family history of cancer ailment.
Although Soyinka did not say what the nature of cancer he was treated for, his son, the Commissioner for Health in Ogun State, Dr. Olaokun Soyinka, later said his father was treated for prostate cancer.
Prostate cancer is a maligancy in the prostate which develops in most men due to old age. It however is not hard to manage, except when it has fully developed and spread to other areas of the body.
