Wenger names Mikel Arteta as Arsenal Captain
Arsene Wenger has confirmed that Mikel Arteta will take over the team’s captain armband from Thomas Vermaelen, who has now moved to Barcelona.
The Spanish midfielder, was Vermaelen’s deputy while he was still at the club and led the team out on Sunday as they defeated Manchester City 3-0 to win the Community Shield.
Arteta, 32, previously captained Everton under David Moyes, he will be assisted by Per Mertesacker.
Wenger also commended Vermaelen for his professional behaviour when he was left out of the team.
“I allowed Thomas Vermaelen to leave before the end of the season. He was not playing regularly, he behaved outstandingly and with dignity. It’s difficult to keep that kind of player at the top level if he doesn’t play regularly.”
