UJ protesters to be released on warning!
The 141 workers and students arrested during a protest at the University of Johannesburg are being released from jail today, police spokersperson Captain Thekiso Mofokeng said.
”A decision has been taken that the people will be released on warning,” Mofokeng said.
Because so many people were arrested yesterday, their release would be over the course of today as each person was processed, Mofokeng said.
They were arrested for allegedly violating an interdict barring protesters from coming within 500m of the university’s entrance.
They are expected to appear in the Brixton Magistrate’s Court on Monday where they will get confirmation on whether they will face additional charges.
The 29 students arrested in Cape Town on 21 October during a protest at Parliament were charged with trespassing, public violence and damage to property.
However, many students laid counter charges which included grievous bodily harm.
Their charges are expected to be formally withdrawn next year. (Daily Sun, SA)
