Typhoon Matmo Drenches Taiwan; 1 killed, 1 missing

Typhoon Matmo slammed into Taiwan on Wednesday, bringing torrential rains and strong winds before heading north for China.

No serious damage was reported, though one farmer was killed and a tourist was reported to be missing after being swept to sea.

Warnings of flash floods and landslides have forced the closure of financial markets and most schools and government offices in Taiwan.

Up to 20 centimeters of rain are expected to fall as the storm makes its way past the island on Wednesday.

The category two typhoon is boasting wind gusts of up to 155 kilometers per hour, but has weakened somewhat as it takes aim for southern China.

The storm comes a week after Typhoon Rammasun killed nearly 100 people in the Philippines, scores in China, and at least 11 in Vietnam.

Authorities expect the death toll from Rammasun, the strongest storm hit southern China in 40 years, could rise as dozens of people remain missing.
