Tom Hank’s Captain Philip Rakes In Half a Million Dollars in its first Night

Sony is looking forward to its new movie, Captain Phillips, to hit $20 million in its debut week having earned $600,000 in its first Night at the cinemas on Thursday
The Somali pirate drama which is directed by Paul Greengrass and stars Tom Hanks also hopes for a chance in this year’s awards race.
Captain Phillips cost $55 million to produce, and outpaced Lee Daniels’ The Butler which earned $450,000 Thursday night and a $24.6 million opening in August. However, with Gravity still taking leads in October 2013, Sony believes Captain Phillips can match the $19.5 million opening of Argo in October 2012.
Warner Bros’ Gravity is expected to top the North American box office in its second weekend with a gross net of $28 million. The space epic, starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, is about crossing the $80 million mark.
