Southern Kaduna PDP Members choose Senator Zego Aziz as Consensus Governorship Candidate ahead of Dec 8 Primaries
Members of the Peoples Democratic Party governorship in the Southern part of Kaduna state have endorsed Senator Zego Aziz as their candidate to challenge Governor Mukhtar Yero for the Peoples Democratic Party governorship in the state primary scheduled for December 8.
The group held several meetings from Sunday to Thursday in Kafanchan, Kaduna State, before deciding to pick Aziz freom a list of aspirants which also included former Aviation Minister, Felix Hassan-Hyat and retired Air Force Officer, Air Commordore John Ajei.
The group, that made the decision reportedly consists of several members like officials of the umbrella body of the Southern Kaduna Peoples Union, the Gurara Forum, Southern Kaduna Christian Leaders Council, Northern Christian Elders Forum, Southern Kaduna Indegens Progressive Forum, Southern Kaduna Peace Initiatives, business moguls, retired civil servants as well as retired senior military officers from the area.
After reaching the decision, they release a statement jointly signed in Kaduna, stating the reason for their choice and urging other contenders to step down and support Aziz’ bid against Yero, who assumed office as governor following the death of his boss, Patrick Yakowa, in an helicopter crash in Bayelsea State in 2012.
They said: ”After careful deliberations and consultations on an issue we hold very dear to the sustenance and development of Southern Kaduna as an entity, a coalition of Southern Kaduna groups, comprising youth groups, religious bodies, elders and our traditional rulers have decided to present a single candidate for the governorship primary of Kaduna State, coming up on the December 8, 2014.
“The onerous task was not easy as the other contenders, apart from being ably qualified, have also worked hard and have put in a lot of resources, time and energy in pursuit of their ambition.
“This, among other reasons, is to brighten the chances of whoever emerges, ensure reduced bickering associated with politicking and also help the contestants to cut down on their spending.
“After careful considerations, understanding and agreement from the contenders (our governorship hopefuls), majority of those at the meeting held here in Kafanchan, settled for Senator Zego Aziz as the sole PDP governorship aspirant from Southern Kaduna to go into the primary.”
