South Korea nominates new prime minister
South Korea’s President Park Geun-Hye on Thursday in Seoul nominated a new prime minister to replace the former Prime Minister, Chung Won.
Won resigned after criticism of the authorities’ reaction to the sinking of the Sewol ferry on April 16, in which some 300 people were killed.
The 59-year-old new Prime Minister, Ahn Hee, was a former Supreme Court judge.
Min-Kyung Wook, the Presidential spokesman, said he was nominated to eliminate the society’s ill practices and the bureaucracy revealed through the Sewol ferry accident.
Also on Thursday, Park accepted the resignations of National Intelligence Service Director Nam Joon and National Security Adviser Kim Soo in a move designed to restore public confidence in her government.
