England captain, Wayne Rooney has tipped Danny Welbeck to succeed as Arsenal’s main striker so as to help boost England’s hopes of qualifying for UEFA EURO 2016.

23-year-old Welbeck joined the Gunners in a £16m deadline day switch from Manchester United, following the arrival of Colombia forward Radamel Falcao from Monaco and could be handed a central role in leading Arsenal’s attack following the Olivier Giroud’s absence until January due to a foot injury.

Welbeck may also have to partner with Rooney up front against Switzerland for England’s opening EURO qualifier on Monday night following injury to Liverpool forward Daniel Sturridge.

The new England skipper, who hopes Welbeck will be given the opportunities to showcase his talents by Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, said: “Danny is a lively player, an impact player. He is quick, he can score goals and I am sure with him getting the move to Arsenal now, hopefully he can play up front for Arsenal, that will really help him with England.

“He is a Manchester lad and I spoke to him a few times, it was a really tough decision for him to move, but for his professional career, he felt he had to. Hopefully he can get a few games up front which would benefit him for England.”

Talking about Welbeck’s United Exit, Rooney said:”Daniel was a popular lad in the (United) dressing room, we all respect him, are good friends with him and will miss him in the dressing room as well. But I wish him all the best and hopefully he does well.”
