Rivers PDP sues Gov Amaechi to Court Over Plans to Investigate Political killings
The Rivers state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has filed a lawsuit against the state government, before the Federal High Court in Port Harcourt.
The PDP is claiming grievances over the institution of a Commission of Inquiry by the state government to look into the politically motivated killings in the state.
Governor Rotimi Amaechi inaugurated a nine-man Commission of Inquiry on April 16, naming the Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Chidi Anselm Odinkalu, as its head.
The commission is to investigate the death of victims of electoral violence and to make useful recommendations that will help government forestall future occurrences.
According to the PDP however, the governor is not qualified to set up a Commission of Inquiry, as he is partisan and believed the PDP is guilty and only the Police and the Judiciary has the power to investigate and make inquiries into such matters.
The PDP also claimed that persons appointed into membership of the Commission of Inquiry are known loyalists of Amaechi, and members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.
The Federal High Court is yet to fix date for the hearing of the suit.
