The Federal Government has revealed plans to create constitutional roles for traditional rulers in the country.

The Minister of Special Duties, Alhaji Kabir Turaki, who represented President Goodluck Jonathan at a two-day South-East and South-South Traditional Rulers Retreat in Enugu, disclosed that the president was working with the National Assembly to include traditional leaders in the development, governance and administration of the country.

The Sultan of Sokoto, Dr Muhammad Abubakar IV, in his reply to the Minister, said that traditional rulers were ready to assist the state and federal governments and work together for the development of the country.

“Traditional rulers are not looking for offices to hold; we are trying to help in the discharge of special responsibilities. Politicians should look at us as brothers and colleagues to help them perform effectively. We must pray for our country and love one another to ensure unity,†he said.
