Power supply to Lagos, environs to decrease as Delta gas plant undergoes repairs
Lagos State and its environs is to experience erratic electricity power supply between now and June 22 as a result of the shutdown of a gas power station in Ughelli East, Delta State.
According to a statement released on Monday by the Federal Ministry of Power, there will be shutdown of the Utorogu gas plant in Delta State and this will affect gas supply to Egbin Power Station in Lagos State and Omotosho Power Station, which supply electricity power to Lagos State and its environs.
Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, announced the shutdown of the gas infrastructure for supply to Utorogu, which commenced on Monday.
Nebo said the action is in line with efforts to consolidate on the successes recently recorded in improved electricity supply to homes and businesses in many parts of the country.
In a statement signed by Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, the Senior Special Adviser to the Minister, the repairs will be completed on June 22, 2014.
The statement promised that at the completion of the scheduled maintenance and upgrades, the facilities will be re-commissioned, hence it will improve gas production and ensure quality output from the lines to the power plants.
Onyia’s statement clarified that the ongoing maintenance will slightly affect power plants fed by these gas facilities, which also include Egbin and Omotosho power stations.
The maintenance work is being carried out by the Nigerian Petroleum Development Corporation, is regrettable, just as the Minister requested understanding and support of Nigerians in the arduous task of revamping the sector.
