Police Officer Shot and Killed in East Harlem
An NYPD officer has died after being shot in the head Tuesday night in East Harlem.
The shooting occurred on 120th Street and the FDR Drive shortly before 9 p.m.
Police Commissioner William Bratton says 33-year-old Randolph Holder and his partner, who were assigned to the housing bureau PSA5, responded to shots fired in the vicinity of East 102nd Street and First Avenue in East Harlem.
According to Bratton, witnesses reported that several men had fled and headed north along the footpath adjacent to the river on the FDR Drive.
Bratton says a male victim told the officers that his bicycle was stolen at gunpoint by one of the men.
According to Bratton, officers in plainclothes, encountered a man on a bicycle northbound at East 120th Street along the pedestrian overpass at the FDR Drive.
Bratton says the man and the officers exchanged gunfire. He says Holder was struck in the head.
Holder was transported to Weill Cornell Medical Center. He was pronounced dead at 10:22 p.m.
The NYPD says the suspect was apprehended at 124th Street and the FDR Drive after briefly running away on foot. He had been shot in the leg.
Bratton says the suspect is at Weill Cornell Medical Center. He says he expects the suspect to be released early Wednesday morning and be taken into NYPD custody.
According to Bratton, three other men were taken into custody in the vicinity of East 111th Street.
Holder is the fourth NYPD officer shot dead in the line of duty since last December. Officer Brian Moore was shot on May 2 in Queens and was taken off life support two days later. In December of 2014, Officers Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos were shot and killed in their patrol car in Bedford-Stuyvesant.(NY1 News)
