Osun 2026: INEC Sets Deadline for Primaries, Charges Political Parties on Peaceful Conducts
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has charged political parties that are taking part in the 2026 gubernatorial election in Osun State to abide by the tenets of electoral laws ahead of their forthcoming primaries. The electoral body warned them of the consequences if they do not adhere to the timetable and regulations guiding the 2026 governorship election in the state.
The charge was made on Tuesday during a stakeholders’ meeting held at the Olusegun Agbaje Media Centre, Osogbo by Dr. Mutiu Agboke, Esq., the Resident Electoral Commissioner of Osun State. He reminded political parties that, according to the election timetable, party primaries must hold between November 24 and December 15, 2025, in line with Section 84 of the Electoral Act, 2022, which mandates political parties to democratically nominate their candidates.
“We appeal to political parties in the state to allow internal democracy to guide their conduct. Free and fair elections begin with how parties conduct their primaries. A rancour-free process will not only reduce pre-election litigations but also strengthen party’s unity and legitimacy of candidates.
“As we speak, campaign activities have not commenced. Section 94 (1) of the Electoral Act clearly provides that campaigns shall start 150 days before polling day and end 24 hours to the election.
“No political party is expected to campaign in whatever guise at this time,” he said.
He advised all political actors to familiarize themselves with INEC’s guidelines on rallies and campaigns available on www.inecnigeria.org, and to avoid violating electoral laws.
While commending residents for their cooperation, he urged eligible citizens who have not registered to do so promptly. He expressed confidence that collective commitment and adherence to the rules would ensure a credible, peaceful, and transparent governorship election in Osun State.
Agboke described election management as a multi-stakeholder responsibility, he appealed for greater collaboration between political parties, civil society groups, and INEC. He added that as of Friday, October 24, 2025, a total of 151,593 registrants had completed their registration across Osun State.
