Open further negotiations with NMA, Ajimobi charges FG
Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State has appealed to the Federal Government to enter into further negotiations with the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) with a view to resolving the current impasse over the sacked of 16,000 resident doctors.
He made the appeal in Ibadan on Monday while addressing members of the state branch of NMA led by its Chairman, Dr. Muideen Olatunji, who were on a peaceful protest against the sack of the doctors.
Governor Ajimobi said that rather than resorting to punitive measure, the Federal Government should continue to dialogue with the doctors in order to reach a compromise on their requests in the interest of Nigerians.
He said that the sack of the resident doctors would further aggravate the already deplorable health condition of Nigerians and also lead to increase in the death rate.
In his response, Dr. Olatunji said members of the association condemned in totality the alleged sack of the resident doctors in the country.
Presenting a letter of protest to Governor Ajimobi for onward transmission to the Federal Government, the state NMA Chairman said that governments at all levels should improve the nation’s health facilities and redouble their efforts towards improving the welfare of doctors.
He said that no doctor in the state should accept or collect any sack letter or sign any register opened by the government.
