Ogun Police Arrest Woman For Child Abuse, Rescue 2 victims

Ogun state Police Command in conjunction with a Non-Governmental Organisation Women Arise For Change Initiative led by Dr Joe Okei Odumakin has arrested one Okanlawon Omowunmi, of Arepo Area of Ogun state for maltreating her house helps(names withheld).

According to DSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Ogun Police Command spokesperson, neighbours of the suspect, who is fond of maltreating her house helps, intimated the Women Arise of her wicked attitudes towards her house helps for several years and they couldn’t bear such again.

Women Arise, he said informed the Police detectives attached to Ibafo Divisional Headquarters and arrested Omowunmi, while they rescued the 2 young girls(victims).

Omowunmi, 29, and mother of one, Adejobi said was fond of beating, chaining and subjecting all her house helps to hard labour and psychological trauma which in criminal, even, barbaric in nature.

“The Commissioner of Police Ogun state CP Ikemefuna Okoye has ordered that Omowunmi be charged to court; and she had been charged to Owode Magistrate Court on 2 count charge, Child Labour and Child Abuse, with Charge No MOO/207C/2014.

“She was however granted bail on condition of 50,000(fifty thousand naira only) and surety with Tax Payment plus property in Ogun State.”. He said.

The case was adjourned to 21th July 2014

“The commissioner of police Ogun state appreciated those who informed the NGO and the Police of the antecedents of Omowunmi in order to liberate the victims who had been chained for days. And he has promised to work hard with all relevant groups, individuals and governmental agencies to stop child abuse, child labour, domestic(or gender) violence and human trafficking in the state.

“CP Okoye specially appreciated Dr Joe Okei Odumakin for her efforts towards putting a stop to all these criminal acts and supports for the command so far; and promised the command’s commitment to ensure that justice is done in all cases being handed by the command.” Adejobi said.
