Obama, Buhari Clash over Gay Marriage

Sharing is caring!

BUHARI - OBAMA
Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has told his US’ counterpart, Barack Obama, that gay marriage is against our culture as Africans. When the discussion about it came up between the duo, Buhari reportedly rejected the gay marriage offer, stating that sodomy is against the law of Nigeria and abhorrent to our culture.
Femi Adesina, Nigerian President’s spokesman, said that the issue of gay marriage was discussed during Buhari meeting in the US but he rejected the offer.
“The issue of gay marriage came up here yesterday. PMB was point blank. Sodomy is against the law in Nigeria, and abhorrent to our culture,” he posted on his Twitter handle.
Buhari’s predecessor, Goodluck Jonathan, had signed into law, the anti-gay bill.  The US and United Kingdom have expressed dissatisfaction to the law saying it is an attempt to infringe on the rights of gay people. Speaking with NigerianEcho, an Islamic Cleric, Mudiru Muhammadu AbduSemih, commended Buhari for his stance on this.
“Islam abhors sodomy and anyone that indulges in it would not only be going against Allah, but will be going against the nature of human existence; for everyman, there is a woman “, the cleric said.
