New Immigration boss talks tough, suspends document inspection of companies
The new Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Mr Martins Abeshi, on Thursday ordered the immediate suspension of documents inspection of companies by his officers.
Abeshi gave the order during his maiden visit to the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) command of the NIS in Lagos.
He said that he had received several complaints of visitations to companies particularly in Lagos by some officers of the command under the guise of inspecting immigration documents.
The Immigration boss said the officers most times carried out their duties in an unprofessional manner, which soiled the image of NIS before the public.
He said following the complaints, the management had immediately suspended such inspections until it produced a new template for the exercise.
The immigration boss threatened to sack corrupt officers in the service if they do not change from their “dastardly acts”.
“Anybody that disobeys this order will be dealt with in accordance with the Federal Civil Service Rules and Regulations.
“Furtherance to this, I have received with dismay negative reports of unethical conduct of some of you who solicit for gratifications and engage in rumour mongering, unguarded utterances and comments.
“This is not only embarrassing but also destroys the image of the service. The situation is totally unacceptable and must stop.
“I expect all officers and men to conduct themselves with utmost decorum as we collectively build a solid and sustainable anti-corruption culture for the service to assist the present administration to realise its primary objectives of a secured and prosperous Nigeria,’’ he said.
Abeshi further said the management would undertake a comprehensive evaluation of all officers in the service.
According to him, this is to ensure that they have the capacity to occupy the various offices they are deployed to and able to perform their tasks professionally.
