National Identity Number: Veritable Tool for National Planning, Amosun
Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun has described the National Identification Number scheme being issued by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) as a veritable tool for national planning and nation building if properly executed.
Amosun made this submission when addressing news men after his data was captured by the NIMC at the Governor’s Office, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, where he also stressed that the scheme was long overdue.
“I think its a good initiative. indeed this should have happened several years back and if we can get it right this time, then it would be good for us,” he added.
The governor said it would to a considerable extent help in confirming and re-confirming the nations population and also help governments plan for their teeming population, particularly those he referred to as the active age grades.
He noted that the age group 16 and above presently captured in the scheme are very critical to any meaningful socio-economic development of the nation, expressing optimism that the scheme would be more efficacious in planning ahead for their future.
“For us as a state and even as a nation, it would help us to plan for our youths and consider them in our plans in other to cater for their welfare,” he stated.
Amosun directed that the initial 10 centres be extended to 20 to cater for each Local Government Area of the state.
The NIMC Director of IT/ Database, Engineer Aliyu Aziz informed that the commission has been having smooth operations in the state as the state government has provided adequate security, space, power supply and other logistics to aid their activities.
He said what is being issued by the commission now is an Identification number and not card which is unique and permanent, informing that the national Identity card would be launched later by the President Goodluck Jonathan.
