National Conference: Jonathan has no hidden agenda.
The Federal Government has dismissed insinuations that the planned national conference has some hidden agenda and can disintegrate the country.
The Minister of Information, Mr Labaran Maku made this known in Abuja, during the monthly news conference on the performance of the economy.
He said President Goodluck Jonathan’s approach towards the conference was indicative of the president’s sincerity and transparency about the conference.
Maku said the president did not need to convene a national conference to boost his chances of a re-election if he chose to run for another term in office.
He said that the president was a high performer and would let his achievements determine his destiny rather than depend on the outcome of a conference.
“Jonathan is a high performer, he does not need a conference to be re-elected if he so chooses to run for the office again.
“The president did not give the committee any agenda for this conference, he asked them to go out to Nigerians and collect their views about what should be the agenda for this conference.
“That to me is the greatest mark of transparency by the president,’’ he said.
Maku said those alleging that the conference would lead to the breakup of the country were against the genuine progress of the country.
He called on Nigerians to go out in large numbers and participate in the processes that would lead to the conference as well as other activities that would guarantee the progress of the country.
“Please, let Nigerians go out and participate in this conference, the committee has been set up and everything is in place.
“This is a vibrant country of very active people, so let us disregard all the negative comments by a few persons.
“Let us not be afraid of discussing our progress, the conference is not meant to split the country,’’ he insisted.
