Move to Zone Senatorial Seat Sparks Protest in Bayelsa PDP Rally
The Grand Endorsement Rally held in Bayelsa to endorse President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday, ended in chaos as the rally turned to a protest.
The protest was staged to show displeasure against attempts by some political leaders in Bayelsa West Senatorial District to zone the National Assembly seats in the area.
The rally, hosted by Chief Thompson Okorotie to endorse President Goodluck Jonathan for the 2015 Presidential elections and Dickson for the 2016 elections, boasted the presence of important state dignitaries such as the representative of Governor Seriake Dickson, the Secretary to Bayelsa State Government, Prof. Edmund Allison-Oguru; Governor’s representative in Sagbama, Chief Collins Cocodia; Commissioner for Education, Chief Salo Adikumo and many stakeholders in the district.
According to reports, some political leaders in the area have plans to stop Senator Heineken Lokpobiri (Bayelsa West Senatorial District) and Dr. Stella Dorgu (Sagbama/ Ekeremor Federal Constituency) -who replaced Dickson after his election as Governor of the state in 2012- from representing the state in the Senate in the next tenure.
The pioneer chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party in the state, Charles Dorgu, said during the rally that the political leaders in the district had decided to zone the National Assembly seats in the interest of peace and harmony in the senatorial district.
He said Sagbama will now produce the Senator for two terms of four years and Ekeremor will produce the House of Representatives member also for two terms.
