More Polytechnics Pulled Out Of ASUP Strike
More Polytechnics are backing out of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP’s nine-month old industrial action.
On Thursday, Federal Polytechnics, Ilaro, Ogun State, under ASUP backed out of the strike after a meeting held in the school complex.
Lagos State Polytechnic, LASPOTECH resumed lectures on Monday, 7 July, 2014. Other Polytechnics are, Federal Polytechnic, Bida (FEDPOBID) Niger State; Federal Polytechnic, Idah, (FEDPOIDAH) Kogi State, and the Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa State.
A lecturer at FEDPOLY, Ilaro, told NigerianEcho, “We are resuming on Monday, 14th, July, 2014. “Nobody is discussing polytechnics’ strike, government is not looking the side of the union and technical committee set up on one of our demands, that is, closing up of gap between our products and B.sc holders had submitted their report to the government, so, we will be wasting the students time not resuming now.
Students, traders and commercial motor-cycle operators in Ilaro were full of joy when the news was broke to them. Victor Oladipo, a student in the department of Building Technology said, “thank you Jesus for answering our prayers, the strike has actually caused much set back academically, I hope they(Lecturers) will not go back on their decision this time.”
Mercy of department of Food Technology on hearing the news just shouted, “praise The Lord for He has done it.” According to her, she is tired of staying at home, “it has been very boring my brother.” She told our correspondent.
A woman simply identified as Mama Bora, selling ladies wears at Oladipo Blocks Complex said, ” we thank God as market will move. Sincerely speaking the strike has done a lot to our purse as market has been dull since the students left town but now that they are resuming, it is sure that, our market sale would jump.”
Generally, the resumption will bring back life to the institutions community, Alhaji Edan, Chairman, Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria, RTEAN, Ilaro chapter said, adding, the transporters too will feel it when students resume, because, “we felt it, when they were on strike.”
