Manchester United suffer Second Consecutive Home Defeat this Season
Yohan Cabaye scored the only goal of the game as Newcastle United condemned Manchester United to a second home defeat in four days, the first time the Red Devils are suffering such fate since 2002.
Robin van Persie returned to the Red Devils line-up after injury, partnering Javier Hernandez in the absence of the suspended Wayne Rooney.
The first chance of the game, however, fell to Phil Jones, who brought a smart stop from Tim Krul early on. Despite the best efforts of the busy Adnan Januzaj, a sleepy first half would only come to life just before the interval, when David De Gea twice thwarted Mathieu Debuchy.
The second half started in far more lively fashion, with Van Persie and Januzaj both going close before Patrice Evra was denied by a combination of the post and Vurnon Anita’s left hand.
The Magpies however, got their name on the scoresheet just after the hour mark. Moussa Sissoko skipped away down the right and cut the ball back for Cabaye, who guided a finish into the corner of the net.
United almost responded immediately as Robin Van Persie converted an offside goal but the lineswoman didn’t let it slide.
The result leaves David Moyes’ side in ninth position, four points behind Newcastle and 12 points adrift of Premier League leaders Arsenal.
