Man Accused in Murder of Cornell Senior Found Guilty
A verdict has been reached in the Benjamin Cayea murder trial.
The jury has found Cayea guilty of second-degree murder.
Police say he choked his girlfriend, Shannon Jones, in her Cayuga Heights apartment last Thanksgiving.
The jury had barely started their second day of deliberations before they reached a decision.
The defense claimed that while Cayea’s actions that evening caused Jones’s death, it was never his intention to kill her.
They asked the jury to convict on a lesser charge of second-degree manslaughter. But the prosecution argued Cayea’s actions that day stemmed from his intent to kill Jones.
He will be sentenced on December 2.
