Make regionalism cardinal demand at confab, Ajimobi charges Yoruba leaders
Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State has charged Yoruba leaders to make the re-introduction of regional government one of their major demands at the forthcoming National Conference.
He gave the charge on Monday while speaking at the second preliminary meeting on the Yoruba position at the forthcoming National Conference held at the country home of an Afenifere chieftain, Sir Olaniwun Ajayi at Ishara-Remo, Ogun State.
Specifically, he canvassed for the adoption of the 1960 Constitution with minor adjustments to suit the present day Nigeria and its peculiarities.
Governor Ajimobi, while commending the unrelenting efforts of Yoruba leaders in the promotion and propagation of the interest of the race in national discourse, urged them to be more committed, loyal and honest, and also demonstrate high level of integrity in advancing the course of the Yoruba at the conference.
He also stressed the need for the constitution of a Technical Committee that would be saddled with the responsibility of coordinating and aggregating the official position of the Yoruba race at the conference.
While saying that the committee should consist of experienced technocrats who had held sensitive positions both within and outside the government, the governor said that all the states in the South-West geo-political zone should be equally represented.
Governor Ajimobi, who decried the disparity in the allocation of revenue to states, stressed the need for the elders to focus attention on why the government at the centre should have less allocation and more to states to enable them take care of their added responsibilities which he said would bring about the desired development in the states.
Speaking at the occasion, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Chief Olu Falae lauded Governor Ajimobi’s developmental strides in Oyo State.
He particularly made reference to the ease with which the governor would get re-election in the state better than some of his contemporaries because “he (Ajimobi) has performed excellently well’’.
