JAMB Releases Admission Cut Off Mark For 2014/2015 Academic Calendar
The policy committee on admission into tertiary institutions on Tuesday as reported by AIT news has resolved to retain the score of 180 as the minimum point for the 2014/2015 admission into universities while 150 was approved as the minimum point for polytechnics and colleges of education.
As tertiary institutions in the country prepare to commence admission for the 2014/2015 academic session, pressure will again be on the universities as 1,584,348 candidates representing 97% of the total number of candidates who sat for the 2014 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, chose universities as their first choice. Only twenty 25,767 or 1.579% made colleges of education their first choice while 22,012 or 1.394% preferred polytechnics.
Nyesom Wike, Supervising Minister Of Education, said, “Some institutions did not fully utilise the admissions quota approved for them by the relevant regulatory agencies of the federal ministry of education in 2013. This disservice to the Nigerian child is totally unacceptable.”
University applications by course or faculty show majority of the candidates opting for social sciences. Medicine, environment and administration followed closely. Education and agriculture came from the rare. The trend is more worrisome at the polytechnic level with the ratio tilting in favor of arts instead of technical courses.
JAMB Registrar, Professor Dibu Ojerinde, said, “We Inherited the issue of ND/HND from Britain. But Britain has changed since, all the polytechnics in Britain are now awarding BTech. What is wrong with us, why don’t we do it, let us change?”
