International Friendlies: Argentina conquer Germany 4-2; Rooney inspires England to 1-0 win over Norway
Manchester United’s new signing, Angel di Maria inspired Argentina to a 4-2 victory over Germany, scoring once and making three assists.
In what was a minor replay of the 2014 Brazil World cup final, only four members of the Germany team which started then were selected, causing a dramatic transformation from the Rio de Janeiro match.
Di Maria set up the first three goals for Sergio Aguero, Erik Lamela and Federico Fernandez before adding the fourth. Andre Schurrle pulled a goal back for Germany before Fernandez turned a Mario Gotze effort into his own goal.
Away at Wembley Stadium, Wayne Rooney marked his first game as captain with a goal as England overcame Norway 1-0.
The Manchester United striker smashed home a 68th-minute penalty won by the impressive Raheem Sterling to give England victory in their first game since they exited the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil at the group stage.
It was his 41st goal for his country, taking him above Michael Owen in the all-time scorers’ list, and saw England end a run of five games without victory ahead of Monday’s opening UEFA EURO 2016 qualifier in Switzerland.
