Gunmen kill police officer, wound another in Abakaliki
Police in Ebonyi on Monday confirmed the killing of a police officer on Sunday by unknown gunmen.
The Public Relations Officer of the Ebonyi Police Command, Mr Chris Anyanwu, told newsmen that more information on the incident would be made public later.
He also confirmed that another officer from the command sustained gunshot wounds in the incident which took place at Ude Street in Hausa Quarters, Abakaliki.
An eyewitness said on the condition of anonymity that the two policemen were on duty at the Abacha Roundabout, near the area.
“They went to the Hausa Quarters to buy sachet water and suya meat when three men driving in a Toyota Camry opened fire on them,’’ the eyewitness said.
The police spokesman said the gunmen took the rifles of the policemen and sped off as the incident created panic in the area.
He said the police had made some arrests in the area, saying that those arrested were already helping the police in their investigation.
Most shops and other business outlets in the area were closed while police patrolled the area on Monday. (NAN)
