Gunmen attack checkpoint, kill policeman
Gunmen on Friday night attacked a police checkpoint in Akwanga Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, killing a mobile police officer, Jonathan Simon, and injuring another.
The incident, which occurred few meters away from a mobile police barracks along Akwanga-Lafia road during a stop and search, prevented free flow of traffic for over 20 minutes and left residents scampering for safety due to the sporadic gunshots.
Nasarawa police command spokesman, Ismaila Numan confirmed the attack at the police check point adding that, information revealed that the gunmen ambushed the policemen on stop and search because of crime activities in the area and opened fire on them from the bush.
The other officer attacked was said to have been shot in the legs and he is receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital while the remains of the killed corporal have been deposited at a mogue while search for the attackers has commenced.
