Group faults FG on varsity resumption order
The Nigerian Human Rights Community, (NHRC) has said that the order given by the Federal Government that University lecturers must resume work is an attack on the cultural values of Nigerians given the fact that ASUU was still 
mourning the tragic death of its former President.
The group in a statement on Saturday said that the FG directive failed to take into consideration the death of Dr Festus Iyayi, the former Academic Staff Union of Universities, (ASSU) President and the fact that ASUU, Iyayi’s family and the entire human rights community are yet to bury the late academic when the FG gave this directive.
The group’s South-East coordinator, Samson Egbe said that it was unethical for the FG to give such a directive few days before Iyayi’s burial. “It is gross insensitivity on the part of the FG to give such a directive. It is an insult on traditional values that at a time Dr Iyayi’s corpse was still in the mortuary, the FG has sent armed policemen to occupy the Universities.
Considering the circumstances surrounding Dr Iyayi’s death, we think this directive is callous and grossly irresponsible. It shows clearly that the Minister of Education and his team are inhuman, morally corrupt and insensitive to the fatal consequences of the ASUU strike.
” The group said it is disturbed that up till now, the Federal Ministry of Education is yet to send a delegation to the Iyayi family to pay condolences.
” The FG has diminished the culture of respect for the dead. It has shown its disdain for human dignity and has clearly demonstrated its contempt for the Nigerian intellectual community” The NHRC which is a coalition of 135 civil society groups said that Dr Iyayi’s corpse is expected to lie in state at the University of Benin on December 4, adding that the martial order of the FG on ASUU resumption is certain to create chaos and affect the last respect the University lecturers ought to give to their departed former President.
