Gravity, Dallas Buyers Club, 12 Years A Slave lead Oscar Winners
Gravity emerged the biggest winner at the 86th Academy Awards on Sunday night with Seven Oscars including Best Director for Alfonso Cuaron, as Dallas Buyers Club and 12 Years a Slave both won three Oscars.
Kenya’s Lupita Nyong’o was the expected winner of Best Supporting Actress for her role in 12 Years a Slave ahead of Jennifer Lawrence. Nyong’o gave a tearful acceptance speech, saying: “So much joy in my life is thanks to so much pain in someone else’s… No matter where you’re from, your dreams are valid.”
One of the biggest surprises of the night was American Hustle, which didn’t win a single award despite 10 nominations. Wolf of Wall Street also lost out while The Great Gatsby, which hadn’t beeen expected to do well, came away with Oscars for Best Costume Design and Best Production Design.
As well as Best Director, Gravity won almost all of the technical categories, including Best Sound Mixing, Best Sound Editing, Best Cinematography and Best Visual Effects.
Best Actor in a Leading Role went to Matthew McConaughey and Best Actress went to Cate Blanchett. Jared Leto won Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Dallas Buyers Club.
Other significant winners were Frozen for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song, and The Great Beauty for Best Foreign Language Film.
The Oscars were hosted by talk-show host, Ellen DeGeneres and had a traditional session In Memoriam tribute which paid respects to those in the film world who died during the past year. They included: James Gandolfini, Karen Black, Paul Walker, Peter O’Toole, Richard Griffiths, Roger Ebert, Shirley Temple Black, Joan Fontaine and Harold Ramis. It finished with Philip Seymour Hoffman.
