The Governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Fashola (SAN), has urged the Federal Government to give the State a special status so as to help the city achieve rapid economic growth.

The governor made the appeal at the opening ceremony of the 28th Lagos International Trade Fair through his Commissioner for Commerce, Olusola Oworu, who said the state is still the economic capital of the country as it generates about 20 per cent of Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product.

Fashola noted that the state needed increased revenue as it had to improve security, electricity and infrastructure so as to keep attracting local and foreign investors.

He said: ”Without tackling insecurity issues, we cannot make this place (Nigeria) an investment destination. We have identified areas such as agriculture, transportation, housing and power that will take Lagos to its investment destination but the state needs to be given special status to achieve this.”
