George Clooney and Sandra Bullock top Box Office with “Gravity”

The Sandra Bullock and George Clooney space drama “Gravity” flew to the top of the box office in its debut weekend opening with $55.55 million in North American ticket sales, George Clooneyaccording to studio estimates on Sunday.

The Warner Bros. adventure directed by Alfonso Cuaron is set almost entirely in space and follows two astronauts faced with deadly complications during a spacewalk.

Last week’s top movie, Sony’s “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2,” dropped to second place with $21.5 million while much talked about Twentieth Century Fox’s “Runner Runner,” starring Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake, opened in third place with a disappointing $7.6 million.

Warner Bros.’ “Prisoners,” starring Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal, and Universal’s “Rush,” starring Chris Hemsworth, followed with $5.7 million and $4.4 million respectively.

“Gravity” with its record-breaking sales has become the highest watched October Movie ever,giving both Bullock and Clooney their highest box office sales ever.
