French Robots Dominate Grammys
The 56th annual Grammy awards was held on Sunday night and was dominated by the French robots,Daft Punk, who won four awards, including Album of the Year for “Random Access Memories” and Record of the Year for “Get Lucky.”
Daft Punk, whose real names are Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter, also won Grammys for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance (for “Get Lucky”) and Best Dance/Electronica Album while “Random Access Memories” also received a fifth award, for Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical.
Macklemore and Ryan Lewis took home four awards, including Best New Artist, Best Rap Album (“The Heist), Best Rap Song (for “Thrift Shop”) and Best Rap Performance (for “Thrift Shop”). Macklemore, Lewis and singers Mary Lambert and Madonna also performed “Same Love” for the Grammys crowd, while 33 couples were married by Queen Latifah, who officiated the ceremonies.
Lorde, the 17-year-old sensation from New Zealand, won two Grammy Awards: Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance, both for “Royals.” Other 2014 Grammy winners included Rihanna, Jay Z and Justin Timberlake, Imagine Dragons, Kacey Musgraves and Led Zeppelin.
Nigeria’s Afrobeat Maesto, Femi Kuti, lost the Award he was nominated for in the ‘World Music’ category, for his album ‘No Place For My Dream‘ to French group, Gipsy Kings, and South Africa’s male choral group, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, who were announced joint winners of the category. He congratulated the award by tweeting; “Congrats to the winners, the nomination already made my year, not winning won’t spoil it”.
