Former Student Leaders Challenge Oshiomhole on Edo Debt Profile
A group known as All Former Student Union Leaders of Nigeria (AFOSULON) has questioned the rationale behind what they described as the current debt burden of Edo state and appealed to the people of the state not to be fooled by the rhetoric of the state government.
A statement by Barrister Prest Aigbokhan, the leader of AFOSULON and former Director of Sports and Socials of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), noted that leaders of tomorrow ought to be averse to debt inheritance. AFOSULON alleges that Edo debt profile which “stands at N33billion and whose payment has been deferred to 2017 could be a clog in the wheel of progress in the state in case of the present administration in the state not getting a return ticket to office in the forthcoming poll”.
AFOSULON calls for judicious use of funds accruing to the state from the oil subsidy subvention and internally generated revenue (IGR). On the penchant for borrowing being exhibited by the Comrade Adams Oshiomhole’s administration, the former student leaders said that “the state will have nothing to lose but pre and post poverty regime and under development if it takes serious look at the incessant borrowing.”
The statement added that the borrowing portends a bleak forecast on the future of the young population; noting that “the idea of reckless borrowing to execute projects that do not yield returns is an economic suicide”.
