EKITI ENGAGES 17,000 UNEMPLOYED YOUTHS IN TWO YEARS …as Fayemi commissions four roads
The war against unemployment in Ekiti State is gradually being won as the State Government at the weekend stated that it has engaged no fewer than 17,000 unemployed youths since 2011.
Speaking at the inauguration of the second batch of 5,000 youth volunteers into the Ekiti Project Volunteer programme, the State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi said his administration has been able to deliver on its promise to engage 20,000 youths by 2014.
Dr Fayemi added that the Skills acquisition Scheme has absorbed a considerable number of the youths, the agricultural and tourism sectors, State Traffic Management Agency, Fire fighters and Paramedics as well as the Peace Corps among others have engaged the service of the youths.
While charging the youths to make the best out of the scheme, the Governor assured that their training at the NYSC Orientation camp in Ise-Orun-Emure Ekiti has been packaged to capsulate self-management, entreprenurial and leadership trainings.
Meanwhile, Governor Fayemi has commissioned four more roads within Ado Ekiti, the state capital. The roads include rehabilitated Ijigbo-Baptist college road, Aladesanmi crescent road, Egbewa-NTA road and Omisanjana-Falegan road.
Commissioning the roads, the Governor said the vision of his administration is to transform roads across the State as a way of making the State more investors-friendly.
He added that government is pursuing this goal with all earnestness even in the face of dwindling resources to keep to the terms of the administration’s social contract with the people.
Fayemi urged the people to partner with the state government in the maintenance of the roads by not burning tyres on them, dumping refuse in the drains or indiscriminately cutting the roads.
Earlier, the Director-General of the State Job Creation and Employment Agency, Mr Funso Aluko had explained that 9000 youths interviewed but 2500 who met all the requirements of the Agency were selected as first group to undergo the current training while the second batch of 2500 would start training on 28th October.
Aluko added that the 7-day training would help prepare the youths so that they could fit in to deliver the social contract of transforming the State.
Meanwhile, community leaders have continued to commend the Governor on the various transformational drives in the State.
The Chairman of Landlords Association of Egbewa community in Ado Ekiti, Pa Eddie Oguntonade in a letter of appreciation to the Governor expressed gratitude for the “speed, sense of responsibility and love with which our request for tarring the road was granted and executed”.
The chairman who said a lot of requests had been made to previous administrations on the road but resulted in “empty promises or at best some gimmicky skirmishes and tanterlizing flag off”, stated that the construction of Egbewa-NTA road has made life more comfortable for residents and commuters of the road.
” our request was dated 31st May 2012 while the tarring of the road was completed early in March 2013 that is, barely nine months interval. Your Excellency, by this singular act you have made the life more comfortable and meaningful for thousands of people using this road daily”, Oguntonade submitted.
