Driver kills pregnant woman, six others

Seven persons including a pregnant woman have been killed in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, by a driver suspected to have been driving under the influence of alcohol.

The incident happened at the Opolo area of Yenagoa metropolis on Saturday.

It was learnt that the driver, who drove a Toyota Avalon car with Lagos number-plate EKY 711 BV crashed into a tricycle popularly known as Keke NAPEP about 11pm on Saturday.

Punch reported that, the victims, which included Miss Akpotu Olorogun, a native of Ammassoma in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area and a man identified as an Hausa man, died at the spot.

The accident, which occurred opposite a popular eatery in Yenagoa, Peperoni, caused pandemonium as the driver of the vehicle escaped before sympathisers started thronging to the scene of the crash.

However, officers of the Divisional Traffic department from Ekeki Police Station were on hand to assist in the evacuation of victims to the Federal Medical Centre in Yenagoa.

Some family members were said to have copied the number of the vehicle and insisted on tracing the owner for prosecution.

It was learnt from some Hausa indigenes in the capital city that their deceased member had since been buried according to Islamic rites.

Contacted on the development, the spokesman for the Bayelsa Police Command, Mr. Alex Akhigbe, confirmed the incident and said, “A private car, Toyota Avalon, was involved. Three persons died on the spot, while two later died in the hospital. Investigation is still in progress.”
