The 2014 US Open is to end with a twist as tennis legends, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer were knocked out by Kei Nishikori and Marin Cilic in the Semi-finals.

On Saturday, Nishikori beat Djokovic 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3. A few hours later, 25-year-old Cilic also secured his debut in the final of a major, beating Federer 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 in just an hour and 45 minutes, ending the Swiss’s dream of clinching an 18th Grand Slam title. Nishikori and Cilic will now meet in the final on Monday. 

“It was just an amazing day for me to be able to play like this,” Croatia’s Cilic, seeded 14, said . “I never dreamt of such a day. It was the best performance ever in my career.” 

Regarding Monday’s final, he said: “It’s going to be a sensational day for both of us. I’m just going to enjoy it.”

24-year-old Japanese player, seeded tenth,is the first Japanese man to reach the US finals since the year the first world war ended. He said after his win: “I hope they were staying up to watch me, even though it was four o’clock in the morning.

“I only started playing points a few days before the tournament,” Cilic who just had a cyst removed in August and didn’t think he would be playing in the US Open, said. “I didn’t even know if I would come to New York. I wasn’t expecting anything. But, after [two matches], I had more confidence in my foot and [played without pain]. I was starting to slide a little more. But my tennis was there already.”
