Demolition of Properties in Ogun: National Human Rights Commission sets up panel to investigate Amosun
The National Human Rights Commission is conducting a public hearing on the
illegal demolition and gross violation of human rights, exercised by the Government of Senator Ibikunle Amosun. Specifically, the demolition of the filling station and a Guest House belonging to Hon. Musa Moruf, a former House of Assembly member during the administration of Otunba Gbenga Daniel in Ogun State which is seen by the Human Rights community and the general populace as a political vendetta being systematically orchestrated by Amosun against all his real and imaginary opposition.
The hearing which started yesterday, Monday, is still ongoing at the Lambo hall of the Federal High Court Ikoyi. The hearing is a response to the petition by the Civil Liberties Organisation, CLO, and one of the demands is the setting up of Independent panel of enquiry to thoroughly investigate the matter and establish the truth of the case. If it is established that there has been illegality committed by the government , CLO demands adequate compensation for the victim. CLO also called on the Human Right Commission to curtail the excessive human right violation in Ogun State.
Investigations by NigerianEcho revealed that Hon. Musa Moruff has, in 2008, applied for the allocation of land through the office of the Governor for the purpose of establishing certain business structures which include a filling station to be situated at J4 Junction Benin/Sagamu express road along aforestation, Ijebu East Local Government area.
It was also gathered that after due approval to build filling station, guest house and some shops; the structures were inspected and certificate of occupancy, land use clearance, approval of same by the Bureau of Urban and Physical Planning and an approval letter for construction of petrol station were given.
On August 2, 2012, the legality of the establishment was questioned by the Government of Amosun with a letter of revocation. The victim went to court to prevent the government agents from carrying out their threats of demolishing the structures.
However, while the court was sitting on the issue on the 10th of August, 2013, Hon. Moruff received a call to the effect that some state armed forces accompanied by heavy duty machineries were on his site, carrying out the demolition exercise.
