Christian Chukwu Advises Stephen Keshi To Step Down as Super Eagles Coach
Former Super Eagles coach, Christian Chukwu has advised Super Eagles caretaker coach, Stephen Keshi to resign from his position as head of the team after their loss to Sudan.
The Nigerians suffered a shock 0-1 defeat to Sudan’s Falcons of Jediane in Saturday’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match at the Municipal Stadium in Khartoum, Sudan. The Eagles now sit at the bottom of Group A with a solitary point while Sudan are third. South Africa lead the group with seven points while Congo follow with six points.
Chukwu who believes Keshi has no further reason to stay on as the Eagles’ coach, said: “This is football for you, Keshi won the 2013 Afcon title and took us to the Fifa World Cup in Brazil and everyone was completely happy.
“Now that he has not done well so far in the qualifiers to the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, Nigerians definitely won’t be happy with him. When Samson Siasia didn’t qualify Nigeria for the 2012 AFCON he was fired so Keshi knows what to expect from his employer with this painful defeat.
“Keshi has no contract at the moment so there is nothing anybody will lose, I think he knows exactly what to expect though that decision is left with the NFF. That’s how the coaching job is, ups and downs. At one point you’re a hero and at another time you become a villain.
“Though I was not available to watch the match but defeat was the last thing I expected, I’m deeply shocked to learn that it’s over for us as far as Maroc 2015 AFCON is concerned. The Maroc 2015 AFCON blackout means we’ve to start all over to organise our team using the home based players as foundation of our team.
“I’m sure Sudan won’t have beaten us if we had used entirely home-based players, so this is the right time for us to come back home, scout for quality players and build up on them. I think there is no hunger or competition among the foreign-based players, there is nothing they’re offering us at the moment.
“Let’s have the home-based players as foundation of our new look Super Eagles, I’m sure the Sudanese side that defeated us would have paraded up to 80% domestic players. Of course, the coaching crew that will handle the new assignment is for the Nigeria Football Federation to decide.”
