CAN denies Endorsing Leke Pitan as Lagos state Governorship Candidate
The Lagos State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria has denied rumours of the endorsement of Dr Leke Pitan as its supported candidate for the 2015 governorship election in the state.
The association released a statement via its media consultant, Rev. Oladapo Daramola, saying that the association only organised a forum to help Christians in the state interact with the governorship aspirants.
He said: “As stakeholders in the socio-political space, Christians deserve to know their leaders before they are chosen and it was in this spirit that they were all invited.
”It would be unfair to conclude that the gathering was to endorse anyone of them as our candidate. It is possible that such conclusions were arrived at because of the outcry within the Christian community in the state that we want a Christian governor come 2015.
“However, it is untrue that any of the aspirants was endorsed at the forum. If the intention was to endorse any aspirant, all of them would not have been formally invited in the first place.
“Our vice-chairman, Very Rev. Stephen Tunde Adegbite, was very clear about this at the event, so I wonder where the reports emerged that Lagos CAN has endorsed any aspirant. We have never exhibited any partisanship in the past. Rather, we have firmly stood behind the programmes and policies of the past governments in the state, especially in the last 15 years that we have had governors of the Muslim faith.
“On the issue of a Christian governorfor the state in 2015, Daramola said the agitations were based on perceived injustice and marginalisation. Today, statistics show that 40 out of the current 57 local government and local council development areas in the State were occupied byMuslims before their recent dissolution.”
