Brazil 2014: Germany Eliminates Algeria with Late 2-1 Win
A goal each from Chelsea’s Andre Schurrle and Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil in extra-time sealed Germany’s passage to the quarter-finals of the 2014 FIFA World Cup against a tenacious Algeria team.
Algeria, who left Leicester City’s Riyad Mahrez and Tottenham Hotspur’s Nabil Bentaleb on the bench for the match, regretted missing some early chances before the Germans, with Arsenal’s Per Mertesacker in defence, started to dominate.
After Schurrle, who came on at half-time, came close to breaking the deadlock in normal time, the Chelsea forward did so two minutes after extra-time with a clever flick from Thomas Muller’s cross.
Ozil doubled the lead with a close-range finish on 120 minutes and that proved to be the winner after Algeria pulled a goal back in stoppage time.
