Cote d’Ivoire’s hopes of going beyond the group stages of the World Cup have been put on hold after a relentless Colombia beat them 2-1 to go become eligible for the round of 16.
James Rodriguez scored a header in the 64th minutes and Juan Quintero slotted home after Serey Die was caught in possession to double Colombia’s lead five minutes later.
Gervinho halved the deficit in the 73rd minute, when he evaded three Colombia defenders before finding the net.
Coach Sabri Lamouchi’s men searched for a late leveler but to no avail, as Colombia held on to an impressive win at the Estadio Nacional in Brasilia.
The Elephants now have to win their next game against Greece in order to reach the second round.
